So much variation! I see that DrExperimentsInStyle (?) has managed an Edwardian pleat recently (Day 10). Could anyone point me in the direction of good instructions for this?
Ahh, an elastic to start with – a cunning plan. I tried this today (Day 14). Not very symmetrical, but it stayed in from dawn till dusk! Definitely a style to practise.
I’ve just been looking at the twitter postings and admiring the variety and pretty clips 😃
I am finding this an involving challenge (I am #19) though I have become more critical of weird hairline shapes and so on now that I have mastered getting it to stay up!
I think this week I am going to go for extra effort with finish and neatness while also not repeating any clips already used.
It would be lovely to see some posts about how anyone else is faring or feeling.
Good idea about searching out little-used accessories – I think if I look hard enough I may have some that haven’t seen the light of day since I was a teenager …
I’ve just been looking at a few of the galleries for inspiration.
I love #6’s contrast of day 32 and 33 with the comb :0)
I didn’t live up to my aim of tidier this week but I had some fun playing and didn’t go back to anything I had already used – even when I really wanted to grab the nearest thing for an easy life!
This week I *will* try the horizontal pleat and I am going to do some ad hoc styles without the mirror. They might look crazy but I think I will learn something about getting it to hold.
How are the Gibson rolls going? I’m still not 100% there (symmetry and neatness issues…), but working on it! Slightly off-piste – has anyone tried wearing a peineta (spanish mantilla comb). I was given one by my formidable grandmother-in-law, and I haven’t tried wearing it yet!
My gibson rolls are all very scruffy as unlike the vertical pleat I have no clue how to fashion the rolling up motion. So there is haphazard scrunching and relying on the clip to do its best!
I don’t have the body to my hair (nor long length) to emulate the video technique of folding it up (with it being compliant!)
I might try wrapping something in temporarily…
Hello Michelle. Claire gave me a great tip – use two crocodile clips to control the ends and create a ‘handle’ to help with the rolling action. Once rolled, pin the roll in place and remove the crocodiles – then pin securely. I haven’t managed to use a comb to hold it all – but am relying on a hundred-weight of hair pins and bobby pins. Mine (today’s, Monday’s, attempt) was still not tight enough. I think the roll has to be really tight in the first instance? Keep going – I’m sure you’ll crack it soon (I’m hoping I will ….!)
Hi catkin
I’ve had something of a lucky gibson fluke today using a poppy elastic, 3 kirby grips and a couple of poppy embellished snapclips just for a finishing touch (they refused to do any actual lifting…)
The poppy band was my cunning plan since I am featured in Claire’s gibson collage with my bright pink underpinnings showing! So I have used that on recent tries so if it shows through it is *clearly* deliberate…
Today mine was painfully tight where the band and roll got together but while I was getting the picture it relaxed enough.
And I got complimented at work too :0)
But – I am really grateful for the crocodile winding tip! Roll on the next roll…
Hello Michelle! I’m #12, and I do like things to be deliberate!!!! Isn’t it nice when someone notices – my OH hasn’t noticed anything different at all for the last 50 days ….! Can’t believe we’re at the half-way point already. So glad yours worked today. The innards of my roll try to peek out of the sides, I also realised. Some firm horizontal pinnings needed, too! Good luck with the crocodile clips!
Wow – such lovely hair, so beautifully fixed! I haven’t ever spent much time studying the back of my head as hair up was always just so convenient. However, for the past 50 days I have now seen what it looks like and also been able to see what other people achieve so that they too can see where they are going. It’s good. Thank you Claire for your input.
Hello again
Aha! You are the gibson pearl girl 😊
Looking at your archive I think you have some wonderful pleats. It looks like you have thick and long hair – I especially love the voluminous twisted pleats look.
And in response to an earlier post, the mantilla looks fantastic in your pleat. I think I have seen one other pleater has one.
I managed to use the mantilla comb today (Day 53?) (although I think too exotic for day-time wear!). How did the crocodile handles work, Michelle? Yes, looking at others’ ideas is always inspiring! Do you find that getting hair look good from both the front and back at the same time is a problem? If the ‘do’ works, something usually looks odd at the front, for me.
Hi all, sorry i’ve been quiet. I *still* haven’t done the croc clip thing yet Catkin, but I did do a sort of gibson pleat today by very lazily leaving my long slide in a half back style, bringing it down and doing a roll up round it held by screw grips. It looked sort of fun and was very comfy but not neat at all. (And didn’t last long before big fallout!)
I’m having an ongoing thing with this newfangled wordpress tech, so I haven’t done my homework yet on my page (because I may well have two pages and I’m trying to not have two!)
Hi Sheena – I know what you mean about the staring at the back of your own head. It’s quite bizarre. I’m now finding I can be happy with the mirror image – front, back, all good, then I take my pic and I can see a misplaced pin or weird new hair loop…
I’ve lost a bit of my pleating mojo actually. I’m struggling with hair sticks, probably overthinking.
Interesting time doing French pleats every day . My hair is quite difficult to stay in a French pleat all day I have to do it really tight otherwise it just falls out . The hair accessories we got at 50 pleats were fab thanks so much x
Can I just say how much I love cakeheath’s food mixer pleat on instagram!
There are some lovely pleats on there that I wish I could hit a like button for. (Almost enough to sign up – but I remain a technotwonk with barely enough smarts to work this one…)
I *finally* tried a gibson roll with croc clips for the rolling action.
It reaulted in a hilarious mess because I didn’t get enough hair corralled in the clips! BUT I do get how that could work – another hundred days maybe or bigger crocs perhaps. I will certainly be trying again sometime when I want a bit of a challenge 😆
One day to go – it doesn’t feel like 100 days of pleating, it has to be said. I shall try and use an exciting clip for day 100! Glad you tried the crocodile trick, Michelle! Good luck for tomorrow, everyone!
Oh my gosh, Day 100! Can’t believe we have made it this far! Well done everyone, for trying in the first place, and for getting as far as you have! (however far that may be) (Is anyone else paranoid that they may have missed a day or somehow otherwise messed up something? I might just do an extra few pleats to be on the “safe side”! Or is it just me?!)

Thanks for your comment Catkin! Stone Bridge has a video tutorial for this low, rolled style of chignon, here is the link for you to take a look at…

I hope that helps! 🙂
